Although it is commonly believed to only affect adults, children can suffer from the sleep disorder as well. In fact, 1% to 10% of children have it. While many have mild symptoms and will outgrow it, others live with long-term consequences. In some cases, it is the result of an underlying condition. New research shows a leading cause of sleep apnea in Weatherford could be caused by tongue-tie.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Tongue-Tie?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tongue-tie is a defect present at birth. It results when there\nis thick, tight, or a short string of tissue underneath the tongue that\nrestricts its movement and functions. Over time, this can result in\nexcessive daytime fatigue, irritability, and a decrease in cognitive abilities.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tongue-Tie and Sleep Apnea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a direct correlation between tongue-tie and sleep\napnea. Poor nasal breathing and upper airway resistance is often the result of\na smaller-than-normal nasal cavity, high arched palate, or a deviated septum.\nAll 3 issues can develop when there is not enough pressure from the tongue against\nthe palate while in utero or during infancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the tongue is tethered, it does not develop a natural\nresting pressure, creating less room at the base of the nose and decreased\nvolume in the nasal cavity. This causes airway issues in infancy that can also\nincrease in severity into childhood and even adulthood. Correcting the tongue-tie\ncan prevent the airway obstructions to reduce the likeliness of sleep apnea\ndeveloping in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Tongue-Tie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Treating tongue-tie involves a procedure called a frenotomy.\nA cut is made into the tissue to improve the function and mobility of the\ntongue.
