It seems like the\nend of the world. Or at least the end of your bed partner sleeping comfortably\nnext to you. Will this condition ever go away, or will it affect you for the\nrest of your life? A dentist explains different ways of treating obstructive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weatherfordsleep.com\/what-is-sleep-apnea.html\">sleep apnea<\/a>\nin Weatherford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Sleep Apnea in the Short Run <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple methods of treating sleep apnea, some of\nwhich you can do immediately. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Not sleeping on your back. <\/strong>Your tongue is\nmore likely to cause airway blockage when you sleep on your back. Try sleeping\non your side instead.<\/li><li><strong>Avoiding alcohol before bed. <\/strong>Alcohol can\nmake your throat muscles relax, increasing the risk of snoring and apnea. <\/li><li><strong>Not taking sleeping pills.<\/strong> Medications\nthat make you sleepy can relax the throat muscles as well. <\/li><li><strong>Treating allergies.<\/strong> By taking medication\nfor nasal allergies, your airways can become clearer. Often an over-the-counter\nallergy pill is enough to do the trick. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Sleep Apnea in the Long Run <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most sleep apnea treatments involve making changes over\ntime. It\u2019s best to get started on them as soon as possible to improve your\nquality of sleep. Changes like these can help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Quitting smoking. <\/strong>Smoking, especially\nover a long period of time, decreases your ability to breathe well. Ask your\ndoctor about resources to help you quit.<\/li><li><strong>Exercising.<\/strong> Studies have shown that\npeople who are physically active have less sleep apnea than those who lead a\nmore sedentary lifestyle. People who work out have a higher quality of sleep\nbecause they are not interrupted in the night by a sudden cessation of\nbreathing. <\/li><li><strong>Losing weight.<\/strong> If you have a neck\ncircumference greater than 16 inches, you have a significantly higher risk for\nsleep apnea than others. When you have more fatty tissue in your neck, it\u2019s\nmore likely to get in the way of your breathing. Research has demonstrated that\nsleep apnea has receded when people lost weight. However, it can resurface if\nyou put the weight back on. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Therapies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If these treatments don\u2019t work out, your doctor may suggest using\na device to open your airways. These are often effective immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such machine is called continuous positive airway\npressure, or CPAP. It delivers air pressure through a mask you wear while you\nsleep. The pressure is just enough to keep your airways open to prevent snoring\nand apnea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although CPAP machines are common and generally reliable,\nsome people find them too bothersome. Some people, or their bed partners or\nroommates, find the humming noise of the machine to be too distracting to sleep\nthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that\u2019s the case, your dentist might prescribe you a\ncustom-fitted oral appliance that you wear during the night. These devices are\ndesigned to keep your throat open. Some bring your jaw forward, which can\nrelieve snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although sleep apnea might not ever permanently go away,\nthere are plenty of ways to make it easier to deal with. If it seems\noverwhelming, talk to your dentist or doctor.
