3 Ways Untreated Sleep Apnea Can Affect Your Relationships
June 17, 2025

Sleep apnea is pretty infamous for disturbing its victim’s rest. But poor sleep quality can do more than make you drowsy in the daytime – it can also affect your relationships (both platonic and romantic). If you’re on the fence about receiving sleep apnea treatment, keep reading. You might want to reconsider after seeing three ways your symptoms can impact you and your loved ones.
1. Your Mood
Studies consistently show that lack of sleep increases your risk of serious mood dysregulation. This can include diagnosable conditions like anxiety and depression, but also “less complex” issues like anger and impatience. If you’re quick to snap at those around you or become irritated at the slightest inconvenience, friends and family are going to have a harder time interacting with you.
Once your symptoms are treated and you’re able to sleep more consistently, you’ll be amazed how much easier it is to think clearly and regulate your moods!
2. Your Partner’s Sleep
Has your partner complained about your snoring? This isn’t exactly a rare occurrence among couples, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken seriously. If you sound like a grizzly bear when you snore, chances are your partner isn’t sleeping any better than you are, and will also be crankier than they otherwise would be.
Besides, listening to your partner’s complaints and taking steps to solve the problem shows that you care and make their comfort a priority.
3. Your Sex Life
Fatigue, poor moods, and partner dissatisfaction can all come together to make physical intimacy very difficult. You and your partner have to be on the same page, after all, and you’re not able to do that very well when you’re both tired and irritated. Consider treating your sleep apnea so you can avoid “waking up on the wrong side of the bed.”
If you find yourself struggling to maintain your close relationships, it’s worth seeking help – whether that means getting a sleep test or talking to a mental health professional. A good night’s sleep can solve more problems than you might think!
