4 Foods That Make Sleep Apnea Worse

1. High-Fat Dairy Products

Foods like whole milk, cheese, butter, and ice cream are high in fat and can increase mucus production in the body. Excess mucus can make it harder for air to flow freely through your airways, especially when lying down.

Additionally, high-fat dairy can contribute to weight gain, which is a major risk factor for sleep apnea. Excess weight—particularly around the neck—can put pressure on the airway and make breathing more difficult during sleep.

2. Fried and Greasy Foods

Fried foods such as french fries, fried chicken, and fast food are not only high in unhealthy fats but can also promote inflammation throughout the body.

Inflammation in the airway can worsen breathing issues and make apnea episodes more frequent. These foods are also calorie-dense, increasing the likelihood of weight gain, which can further aggravate sleep apnea symptoms.

3. Alcohol

Alcohol is one of the biggest dietary triggers for sleep apnea. It relaxes the muscles in your throat, making it more likely for your airway to collapse during sleep.

Even small amounts of alcohol—especially before bedtime—can increase the number and severity of apnea episodes. It can also reduce your body’s ability to wake itself up when breathing is interrupted, which can make symptoms more dangerous.

Limiting or avoiding alcohol, particularly in the evening, can significantly improve sleep quality.

4. Sugary Foods and Refined Carbohydrates
